Technology
ZumaTek's proprietary technology would allow physicians to treat breast cancer before it has formed a tumor or spread to lymph nodes. The technology is expected to be especially useful for identifying tumors in large or small dense breasts, which are difficult to image using current mammography techniques, and would allow the nearby chest wall to be scanned for precancerous cells. In addition to its advantages in detecting cancer cells in breasts, the scanner has the capability to scan the axillary lymph nodes for evidence of metastasis, which is not possible using traditional mammography. The device(s) could be used to monitor the progress of radiation therapy or chemotherapy in breast cancer patients as it is able to non-invasively detect chemical changes in the cancer cells. The devices can also be combined with on-board biopsy or treatment devices.
