He has degrees in Biology (1983) and Electrical Engineering (1988) from the University of New Brunswick. After working in management positions for a Canadian telecommunications provider, he worked for a Silicon Valley start-up (1996-2001), providing project and product management to large clients. After getting a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University (2001), he enrolled in the Biomedical Engineering doctoral program at Duke in 2002 and received his doctoral degree in September, 2006. He has been largely responsible for developing the x-ray CT dedicated mammotomography system in Dr. Tornai's lab. He is the coauthor of more than 30 publications and presentations related to medical imaging.

Dr. Tornai has worked in the imaging field at Cornell University (1988-1989) and UCLA (1989-1997). Recruited to Duke in 1997, he is currently an Associate Professor in the Departments of Radiology, and Biomedical Engineering. He has obtained over $3M in governmental grant support for this technology, and has helped obtain over $5M in other related projects in both academia and technology start-up grant funding. He participates in the IEEE, SPIE and AAPM professional organizations, and is the coauthor of more than 150 publications and presentations related to medical imaging.
